bullet  General Notes:

William Henry Alexander was born in Ashville, NC and lived as a child in West Ashville. His mother, Annie Mazyck died of consumption in 1809 when he was only eight years old. His father..always reffered to as "S.C." Alexander, was a traveling salesman selling appliances and tools to hardware stores in Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia and North Carolina.

Young "Willie" was raised by aunts and uncles in Asheville and spent several summers with his Uncle Golay on the Biltmore Estate. He made friends with Cornila Vanderbilt..and they took turns riding her pony. Later he was sent to Massennutten Military School in Virginia...where he became Corps Commander.

When his father met and married Suzie Mae Chamberlin in Carlisle, Ohio..Wille came to live in Carlisle. As a young man, one of his first jobs was as the streetlight lamplighter for the town of Carlisle. Every night he would take his ladder and light all the oil fueled street lights...and every morning he put them out. He also worked in his fathers hardware store in nearby Franklin, Ohio.

While he was attending High School he met his future wife Ruth Clarissa Rettig, the daughter of a civil engineer. They soon married and had two children; Boyd and Kent Alexander.

After he was married, "Willie" became known as "Bill" Alexander and was a partner with "S.C." in the hardware business...later he opened his own Radio Sales and Repair store, which he operated until WW II when he was mobilized to work for the Army Signal Corps. After the war he took a sales position with SREPCO, Inc. a wholesale electronics firm in Dayton, Ohio. One of the benefits of this position was that our family had one of the first television sets owned in Franklin.

Bill Alexander was a kind and gentle man who loved his family, and his granchildren were is special love. He always enjoyed gardening, photography an had an extensive coin collection, mustache cup collection and a large collection of shaving mugs .He and his wife Ruth also enjoyed traveling and spent much time traveling around the U.S. and Europe. He never forgot his roots and often traveled to Asheville, NC.
