    Private First Class Kirkpatrick was a member of Company E, 2nd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. He was listed as Missing in Action while fighting the enemy in South Korea on July 26, 1950. He was presumed dead on December 31, 1953. Private First Class Kirkpatrick was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Korean War Service Medal.

Newspaper clipping shows "R Kirkpatrick" in the middle of the blackboard at Moo Hak High School in Seoul, Korea where he was held prisoner until 20 Sep 1950 and then marched north.
