    • OBITUARY
CLINTON \emdash Roy S. Hume, 90, of Clinton passed away Monday, Jan. 20, 2014, at Mercy Living Center-South.

Roy was born June 27, 1923, in Jamaica, Iowa, the son of the late Sanford and Flora (Flackler) Hume. He graduated eighth grade in Belpassi, Calif. He worked on the family farm, the Milwaukee Railroad, enlisted into the United States Navy, and eventually retired from Allied Structural Steel in Clinton after 35 years.

On Nov. 22, 1953, he married Joan C. (Reynolds) Motroni in Clinton. After 50 years of marriage, Joan preceded him in death on July 28, 2003. Roy is survived by his sisters, Doris Rainer, Betty Henry and Carol Mowrer.

Roy proudly served in the United States Navy during World War II as a plane captain on the USS San Jacinto from 1943-1946. He loved going to his annual ship reunion to see his old friends and shipmates. He was also proud of the fact that President George H.W. Bush and pro football Hall-of-Famer Art Donovan were shipmates of his. He received and attended invitations from President Bush to attend the opening of his Presidential Library at Texas A&M in College Station, Texas, and the commissioning of the aircraft carrier USS George HW Bush in Norfolk, Va.

Roy was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was a member of the Clinton Church of Christ, where he served as an elder and taught Sunday school to fifth- and sixth- graders for over 20 years. He was also one of the founding members of the Lighthouse Church of Christ. He always smiled, and when anyone would ask him how he was doing, he would answer "if I was any better, I wouldn't know what to do."

Roy is survived by children, Mark R. Hume of Johnsburg, Ill., Peter (Sue) Motroni of Clinton, Tim (Vicki) Motroni of Delmar, Iowa, John (Ann) Motroni of Green Back, Tenn., Kathy (Mark) Mallicoat of Clinton; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and a very special niece, Mary Beth Johnson.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Clinton Church of Christ with military honors to follow at the church by the Clinton AMVETS Post 28. Burial will be at Clinton Lawn Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Peter Motroni, Anthony Motroni, Joseph Motroni, Spencer Hume, Joey Fahlbeck and Eric Mallicoat. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to the service time at the church on Thursday. The Clinton Chapel Snell-Zornig Funeral Homes and Crematory is in charge of arrangements. Online condolences may be expressed by visiting his obituary at www.snellzornig.com Memorials can be made to the Clinton Church of Christ.
