    • OBITUARY

      ROBERT W. HUME (contributed)

Robert W. Hume was born July 29th, 1863, and died April 26th, 1940, his death resulting from an automobile accident. He was the eldest son of R.W. and Sarah Ann Hume of pioneer Scotch and English parentage. April 4, 1888, he was married to Alice Smith, daughter of Isaac Smith, also of Moundville. To them were born six children, one of whom died at the age of two years, and one in infancy. There remains to mourn his passing, his wife (also injured in the accident, and receiving treatment in the hospital at Watertown), three sons, Robert of Portage, Glendon of Akron, Ohio, Frank of Miami, Florida, and the daughter Elda, (Mrs. Fred Quadde) of Milwaukee; also five grandchildren, two brothers, William and George, both of Moundville, and a half sister, Eliza, (Mrs. Arthur Voertman) , of Portage.

Mr. and Mrs. Hume commenced married life on a farm in the town of Buffalo; later they moved to Moundville where they were active in public affairs and church work. They became residents of Endeavor about eighteen years ago and soon made many friends by their hospitable attitude. The funeral services were held at the Endeavor home and the Moundville M .E. church of which Mr. and Mrs. Hume were members. Rev. Fred W. Heberlein of Briggsville, a former neighbor and pastor, officiated and interment was made in the M.E. cemetery. A large cortege of relatives and friends followed the body to its resting place and a wonderful tribute of flowers attested the love and regard of loved ones and friends. It seemed an unusual, sad happening. Mr. Hume appeared young for his age. His figure was erect and youthful, his step quick and active, and he enjoyed good health. His plans were all made for his summer work in his garden and berry field and he was looking forward with interest and anticipation. He liked to have a part in the affairs of men, was interested in people , and was always ready and pleased to open his home as a meeting place for friends or as a resting place for the weary. He was a man of clean habits, proud of his family, true to his convictions, kind-hearted and a good citizen.

He has gone -- suddenly -- and we are sad. But his rugged personality, his hospitable smile and his kind acts to his fellow travelers will be remembered; and in the hearts of his loved ones he still lives. And comforted by a beautiful memory, trusting in One who "does all things well," we can say in faith, "Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning." -- Mrs. A. R.
