  • Notes
    • According to "The Buildings of the South Church, Bergenfield, NJ," by Adrian C. Leiby, 1968:

"The churchmasters who supervised the building of the first church were Ryer Ryerson, David Demarest, Daniel Demarest, Carrel De Baun, Jan Durie, and Cornelis Leydecker.

Carrel De Baen is listed as one of the first to contribute to the building of the church (L9-10-7-2).

...someone set down two unfinished drafts of his thoughts about what the inscription over the church door ought to say...perhaps we can assume that the write was one of [the churchmasters]...he may have been...of French extraction, which the fleur-de-lis decoration also hints.

'This house is built with God's help through the builders Ryer Ryerson & David Demarest & Daniel Demarest & Carel Debaen & Jan Durie and Cornelis Lydecker, who are chosen by the Congregation for the continuation of the work for the best of the Congregation. Come all ye people and hear how good the Lord is to them that seek him with all their heart...here God wants to teach us what we have to do and be not slow to come to learn of God what the spirit says to the Congregation. Yes, come, hear him Yes come.'" [1]
