My mother and father met on a Friday at the home of my great aunt, Francis Cline. Dad proposed marriage on the following Sunday. John was a medical student at Vanderbilt University and my mother was an undergraduate at the Tennessee College for Women. My grandmother, Grace Paul Brown, told me that she knew early that this was a serious relationship because my mother was going out with no one but dad and, even more importantly, she was riding the trolley car to go on dates. Mother and dad eloped three months after they met. They kept their marriage a secret for several months. Mother dropped out of school and went to work as a lab technician. [1]
