  • Notes
    • Luther, Jr. had a dispute over money and this left a bad relationship with the Father. He was a telegraph operator for the Rock Island Railroad in Chesterfield, St. Louis Co., MO. where he met, proposed and married Miss Minnie. Letter to Miss Minnie from L. M. Emerson, is hand written and typed as written with all puncuation and language unchanged.

      Chesterfield Mo
      Dear Miss Minnie!
It is with no small degree of apprehension, as to the manner in which you may receive the following avowal, that I take up my pen to address you; I have struggled with my feelings till they have now got the better of my irresolution; and throwing aside all hesitation, I have ventured, although alarmed at my own boldness in doing so, to lay my case before you for your decision.
When I first had the pleasure of making your acquaintance I was quite fascinated with you and fascination has, day by day, grown to affection which I have deferred from time to time confessing to you although I have several times been on the verge of making the confession but somehow I could not find the words or appropriate time in the hope that I might do so with some degree of ease and calmness, but in vain. I can no longer resist and keep silent on the subject which keeps my soul in turmoil and apprehension. If you cannot return my affection say at least you do not despise me and let me cling to the idea that time may acomplish that which, I fain hope, a first impression has done, presumming, unless a fatal pre engagement (a thing I dare not trust myself to think of) exists, that you will comply with my request, seeing that my designs are perfectly sincere and honerable. I remain, waiting for your favorable answer.
      Your devoted servant til death,
      signed) L. M. Emerson

The announcement in a St. Louis newspaper reads:
      SECURE LICENSE AT CLAYTON
      L. M. Emerson, telegraph operator at Chesterfield, St. Louis county, for the Rock Island railroad, and Miss Minnie Beacock of Franklin county, Mo., were granted a marriage license at Clayton yesterday.
