    • BIOGRAPHY:
Clyde worked as a streetcar conductor in St. Louis where they met and Cassa became a "Nanny" for his four children. They fell in love and she married this "divorced" man against her parents approval. Although she was the apple of her daddy's eye she was banished from the home and never got to see him again. She raised the four children by Clyde's former marriage and had ten more children with Clyde to raise. When she had 4 children plus 4 step-children, circumstances caused her to move to Arkansas. They lived in the swamps outside Jonesboro, Cassa and 3 of the 8 children caught malaria. The depression hit the family hard and with jobs scarce, Clyde's injuries and hospitalization of over a year, illnesses and death of a family member, heavy burdens were cast on her. To have money for her family, Cassa took in washing and ironing for the Civil Conservation Camp crew. Water had to be carried from a well some distance from the house, heated on a stove, then the clothes scrubbed on a wash board. Food was so scarce she was only able to feed her children twice a day and she only ate once a day so there would be food for the young ones.
School was out for the children because they had no shoes. The boys got used ones from the CCC, but there was only one pair for the 4 girls to wear, and these had to be shared when one or the other had to go outside to the outhouse. After Clyde got out of the hospital, Cassa got word her father was dying, so the family of 8 (step-daughter Juanita and her 2 children stayed in AR; Reuben, Gene, and Howard already left home to find work) moved back to Missouri. She got back to St. Louis too late to see her father as he had already died and been buried.
Life was still hard in St. Louis, with Clyde unable to work the family had to live with her dear sister-in-law, Helen (Kirkpatrick) Green, then when ADC (Aid to Dependent Children) became available the family lived in a 4 room house at 2202 Sims Ave., Overland, Mo. with 8 children, later they moved to a farm in Florissant owned by Clyde's nephew, Jack Green.
In 1951, with 4 children at home, the family moved to St. James, MO. on a farm owned by Cassa's sister Henrietta (Emerson) Prouhet, until soon after her mother, Mimmie (Beacock) Emerson, died. By then Clyde's health deteriorated very badly, and they moved to California briefly then to Tucson, Arizona.
She was never able to attend any function without her husband's approval, which was not much. Clyde did send her to beauty college at age 50 and she worked in that field until Clyde's death in 1959. After his death she had the freedom to do the things she yearned to do, like attending Church and becoming a Christian. She became a wonderful and devoted Christian woman. She was gentle spoken, never said a bad word about anyone and was loved by all who knew her.
