      PAT-016:
      "History of St. Louis County"
      by William Thomas, Vol. 1, (1911);

      p 47
      ?The Patterson Settlement
      The very early settlers of St. Ferdinand township, aside from the long line of French pioneers, were Richardson, Musick, Hyatt, Hume, Harris, Patterson, Utz, Carter, Evans and others. James Richardson, who became a very large land holder came from Virginia and aided and influenced many American settlers to secure locations. It is said that a thousand arpents of land, of which the Patterson settlement was a part, were given to Mr. Richardson by the Spanish Alcalde in return for a side-saddle which Mr. Richardson had presented to the grandee's wife. The old plat books show the Patterson road, leaving the city of St. Ferdinand, crossing Coldwater creek near the property formerly of the St. Louis University, running across the common fields a distance of one and three-fifths miles until it reaches the domain of Lucy Patterson [our ID 174]. On one side of her was William Patterson [our ID 187], on another Prior Patterson [our ID 677]. Survey 105, covering about 350 acres, is credited to John Patterson [our ID 185]. In the same settlement were Hiram [possibly our ID 2081] and Joseph Patterson [possibly our ID 380] and Lucy [possibly our ID 684] owned a number of other goodly sized parcels of land thereabouts. The Hyatts, the Humes, the Douglases, the Tylers, the Hughes, Evans, Bassetts, and their successors appear to monopolize one side of Coldwater creek, while the Aubuchons, the Chomeaus, Tissons, Antoines and Montaignes got possession of the other. This latter group used Robins Mill road, which led them across the St. Ferdinand common, in their frequent trips to Florissant.

      Elisha Patterson [our ID 173] acquired a great quantity of real estate in St. Ferdinand Township near Florissant in a very early day. He died in Jun 1854. His ?tree? had fourteen boughs branching out from the main trunk. He was a worthy compeer of old John Sappington of Carondelet township. His wife, whose maiden name was Hubbard, died at Florissant in Nov 1876, aged 90. All of their children married and there resulted many leaves on the ?tree? embellished with their children?s names; and there is reason to believe that the descendants of the original pair now number more than 200 - a few of whom are now living in the Florissant valley. Referring to the Pattersons, it used to be said that there was only one other family in the township that exhibited equal fecundity and that was the Aubuchon family. It ?stood? in the paper, thirty six years ago, that a traveler, in passing along a certain road leading out of Florissant would, for miles, see nothing but Aubuchons on one side and Pattersons on the other. If he met a man driving a yoke of steers and saluted him as Mr. Patterson, he was apt to hit it; and if he met a boy on a bob-tailed pony, all he had to do was call him Aubuchon.
      ...
      After considerable research we have learned of but four "Pattersons" now living in or near Florissant. They are Johnnie Patterson [possibly our ID 161], Mrs. John E. Jones [our ID 169], Patterson Hume [possibly our ID 589] and Marvin Patterson [our ID 8655] [These would all have been grandchildren of Elisha and Lucy Hubbard Patterson]. ..."

      James Thompson.
      On the 2d of July, 1849, occurred the birth of Margaret Carrico, who twenty years later became the wife of James Thompson. Her parents, Walter and Louisa (Downs) Carrico, owned the farm adjoining the homestead of Mr. Thompson, and there they passed away in the ?60s. By the union of Mr. and Mrs. Thompson there were born ten children, two of whom are now deceased, those surviving being as follows:
      -Eveline, born on the 5th of December, 1870, is the wife of Julius Warren, an engineer for the Portland Cement Works;
      -Margaret L., born on the 2d of November, 1872, is the wife of John Patterson, a farmer;
      -Amanda V., born on the 13th of November, 1874, is the wife of Otto Harder;
      -Gilbert, born on the 10th of April, 1877, married Grace Pritchard;
      -Silas H., born on the 22 of January, 1882, married Betty Hume;
      -Sarah A., born on the 10th of September, 1885, became the wife of Horace Wagner; and
      -Aurelia, born on the 30th of July, 1887, and
      -Elmer L., whose birth occurred on the 18th of December, 1889, are both unmarried and continue to reside with their parents.

      ANYONE HAVE ANYTHING ON THIS STORY?
      QUESTION AND NOT PROVEN:
      Blanche Nolte Patterson

      Per Blanche: a neighbor whose land adjoined John McAllister Patterson's land -- John Glazer (Glaser, Glasier) who was drunk all the time got mad when Patterson hogs or cattle got onto his farm and destroyed some of it. He hid in the Patterson barn with a shotgun and threatened to get the Pattersons (including the children). Story goes that John Patterson shot him. When the police were called, none came. Aunt Josie [Josephine (Leber) Nolte] said he wouldn't be held because he was a good Christian man. Later John Glazer's daughter, Tillie, worked for the Pattersons, helping with housework. Another daughter was Carrie.
