  • Notes
    • The Salem Lamplighter, July 1977
Funeral services for Edward Charles Hume, sixty one year member of Salem Baptist Church, were held Wednesday, June 15, 1977, at 2:00 P.M. in the Salem Baptist Church with burial at old Coldwater Cemetery on Old Halls Ferry Road.
Ed Hume, 79, died Sunday morning, June 12, 1977 at his home 43 N. Dade in Ferguson, Mo., following an extended illness with his heart and breathing. Mr. Hume was born in a log house on the bluff of the Missouri River near the corner of Shackelford and New Halls Ferry Roads on March 30, 1898. He was the third child of his parents, Elisha Patterson (Pat) Hume and Mary Lindemann Hume. There were ten children in the family. The father was a farmer and the family lived in several homes in the Hume and Patterson settlements. Ed attended the one room Coldwater School which still stands on New Halls Ferry Road.
On July 2, 1921 Edward Charles Hume was married to Margaret Marie Patterson in a garden rainbow wedding at the home of her parents, John and Margaret Lula Patterson. Dr S. E. Ewing, executive secretary of the St. Louis Baptist Mission Board performed the ceremony.
Through the years, the Humes lived within a few miles of the birthplace of both.
These houses included at least three log houses covered with siding. They had four children. James Ewing Hume was born in the old Patterson homestead on Sinks Road. The other three, Marion Gilbert and John Patterson Hume and Mary Lou Boone were born in the old brick Coldwater Church on New Halls Ferry Road at Patterson Road. Ed's father owned it at the time. There are thirteen grandchildren and one great grandson. Ed is also survived by three sisters and a brother.
A very hard working man, Ed farmed, worked for Fischer's Ice and Coal Co., Shelty Curlee Possum Hollow Farm, Florissant Valley Elevator Cooperative, drove school buses for Hazelwood School District and Custom Coach, was a Custodian for Salem Church, gardener for Welch's and caretaker of Coldwater Cemetery. He loved God's great outdoors. He loved horses, had several and rode quite well. He raised Collie dogs for several years.
Ed attended the Coldwater-Salem Church all his life. In 1916 he walked several miles through the snow to be baptized in the little white frame Salem Baptist Church where he was a very faithful member for 61 years. His three sons are deacons. All the family are active church members.
He loved people. He and his wife boarded school teachers as well as the men who were putting in the dikes on the Missouri River. He and his wife shared their home and their meals with many, many people through the years -- relatives, friends or just someone who needed a helping hand.
He was an enthusiastic supporter of his grandchildrens's ball teams as well as the church ball teams. He received two awards for being the best rooter for the church teams. Ed's smile, twinkling eye and witty replies as well as his helping hand will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. He has gone to be with the Lord to receive his reward.
